Some of you might be thinking of going to somewhere cold for vacation, but unfortunately, you are pregnant. Now is it safe for pregnant moms to go to cold high altitude places? Here’s the answer
Experts say that as long as you keep the temperature at the right level it is totally fine to go to cold high places. The right temperature is one that’s warm enough but not too hot that you raise your body temperature, which could be dangerous for your developing baby.
However, keep in mind that pregnancy makes you short of breath. So if you’re not used to being at a high altitude where there’s less oxygen in the air, you’re going to compound your shortness of breath. And you won’t have as much endurance and stamina as you would at low altitudes. Research have proven that women who live at a high altitude tend to have slightly smaller babies.

You and your husband already planned a romantic honeymoon at a romantic island, and then somehow you found that that you are pregnant. The tickets and hotel reservations are booked within 2 weeks away, should you cancel the trip? Can you still travel by airplane when pregnant?
Generally, women who are having a healthy, normal pregnancy are free to come and go as they please. However, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends women don’t fly after their 36th week of pregnancy.
Most airlines does not restrict pregnant woman on first and second trimesters, but during your third trimester you may run into some restrictions. However, women who are having complications associated with their pregnancy (poorly controlled diabetes, sickle cell disease, placental abnormalities, hypertension or those at risk for premature labor) should not travel.
Flying in early pregnancy is safe. However, during the first trimester the main concern over flying that you might be uncomfortable due to pregnancy symptoms like morning sickness during the flight.
However, all airlines recommend you consult your physician before travel at any time during pregnancy. Do not take risk by getting a “permission-to-travel” letter from your doctor. You shouldn’t fly if pregnancy is considered high-risk by the doctor.
My personal experience
I was actually four weeks pregnant when I flew to Hawaii from Indonesia. The trip took about 30 hours in total. Before we went there, we consulted our pregnancy doctor first and he gave us a permission letter. Lucky for me, I didn’t have any morning sickness/nausea along the flight. Everything went smoothly and our four weeks daughter in the womb also got to enjoy the Hawaiiaan sunset.
